I still don't really understand what has gone on!
As far as I'm concerned, this forum is consistent with its original ethos. It's always going to be a difficult balance between not allowing bigoted comments to be considered acceptable - which I fully agree with - and having community moderating, or at least community-approved moderating - which I also agree with.
There may be the odd occasion when a moderator makes a decision and doesn't announce it verbatim so that there can be a 48 hour dialogue about whether it's the right one or not. This is a necessity, and we have to surely allow a little give and take on this matter, given that we are subject to the legal dictats of a system that we all recognise to be pretty powerful and oppressive.
And there might be the odd person who behaves like an idiot and makes some off-colour remarks without being banned. While I don't agree with letting people takeover who have an ulterior motive, nor with tolerating the intolerable, it might be a good idea to give this sort of thing short thrift by simply ignoring it. You will find that these 'characters' disappear pretty quickly if people don't give oxygen to them. There have been a few people whose existence here I didn't exactly relish, but I simply tried to ignore them. They've pretty much all fucked off.
I really don't see any reason for a new forum, and I don't see any reason we can't keep this forum going. It's obviously easy for me to say this, as I don't run or moderate the site, but I would like to think I make a decent contribution. And I would be happy to make a financial contribution. I would, personally, be in favour of a £1 subscription fee. If everyone that had joined had paid £1, firstly, you'd be less likely to get idiots, and secondly, that would be £210 straight away. Except that we probably wouldn't have had 210 people sign up, but I'm sure you would have got £100, which would then negate the need for the likes of Dawn to kindly contribute £12. I'm not sure if this is logistically possible, and I guess it can't be done now, anyway.
I'm probably not going to join a new forum, because I don't see any need for one in the first place, and secondly, I don't have enough time. It would be a loss for me personally were this forum to end because absolutely everyone I know, apart from my brother, disagrees with virtually anything I say about everything! While I have become accustomed to this and am perfectly content to be constantly attacked in 'real life' (which I am) for simply stating my views, which are completely uncontentious and always factually accurate (which I will always continue to do) it is nice to have people agree with me occasionally!
Also, the people who run the DIF will naturally proclaim it as a victory should the SZ finish. Which is ironic, because as far as I can see, the only reason there's a problem is due to some idealism which is well-meaning but a little unrealistic.
So my view is that we should work out how we're going to move forward, who's going to moderate the site, who's going to run it, what the financial implications are, what can be done about this. And I think we should all resolve to be slightly less idealistic and slightly more practical.
