I only see the community eventually petering out now. I have to say though, its been nice to extend my time on the forums with you guys and novum,frog and DG have done a fantastic job.
I've really enjoyed batous hilarious sense of humour, wubs facts, mikeys passion, oi's one liners, skettis chat, feathers common sense, dubs car stuff (lol), dawns computer problems hehe, in fact everyone in one way or another even if its been for some 'arguing' :p.
It's usually been about laughs for the most part, I think a couple hundred or so of my spam count consist of 'LOL'

Its only a shame there weren't more who came from DIF or more who stayed once they did come over but for various reasons they either went back or just didn't bother with forums anymore.

I must confess to feeling a bit confused! I was just getting comfortable in this forum, and now it's all change! I'm not sure what I'm going to do - I need to think about it. I think it's important to remember that no forum with a diverse membership is going to be "perfect", with everybody behaving exactly as they should all the time. As grown-ups, we ought to be able to "kiss & make up" after any squabbles or misunderstandings, and move on. If this forum has failed to meet any expectations, then any problems ought to be addressed here and learned from, rather than go on creating new forums in the hope of finding a sort of "cyber-Utopia". That's just IMHO - what do I know, really?!

I'd just like to add that I really appreciate all the hard work admin puts in - it really can't be easy and I take my hat off to you!

finding it a little hard to get my head round this - havent been posting much but have been having a read every now and then and the fact that I have no idea what craziness has created this schism says to me that the sz is not working as intended.

I loved watching this place start develop and grow - I loved what it stood for - community, trust, respect and somewhere to come to chat about anything with some cool people where those people made the decisions as a community.

The hard work that has been put in from all sides has been pretty damn inspiring - to a point that it has motivated and empowered me to make some real life changes - the lack of 'doom and gloom' threads, the lack of hate speech and the fantastic advice, tips and sense of belonging that has sprung from here is immense so a huge thankyou is thoroughly deserved to all - admin, mods and contributors.

What is sad imho i that rather then bring to the community the concerns of admin and of members past and present - admin have talked amongst themselves and decided to start afresh addressing concers but keeping the ethos of this place that is deemed to have 'worked' or be a selling point.

What I have taken from the op and the remarks throughout the thread is that community led moderation is the problem and that a heavier hand is wanted in order to make the changes deemed necessary - which is not in keeping with here so the only option is to go on to create a new site with that change in place at inception. Which again is the only way in which to retain credibility as stated previously in the thread.

I agree with dubs - we either agree with the departing admins that community led consensus in decision making is not going to work and defect over to the new site or we take up andy's offer and attempt to prove that we can be the change that we want to see.

Sorry if this post does not make the most sense - I am conflicted - part of me is grateful for the opportunity that has been given and wishes nothing but the best for the new site and part of me feels somewhat let down.

If people can't agree to processes, then none get put in place. If some people want 100% consensus and others (like me) think that's implausible to achieve, we aren't going to agree. I think it's worthy to strive for consensus, but ultimately, it comes down to people who don't agree with the majority, to either have their arms twisted, or just go along with other people to keep the peace - which isn't true agreement. True 100% agreement's in most debates is highly unlikely, imo.

Neither 'side' is right or wrong, but it's just that agreement isn't reached, so nothing's resolved, and nothing progresses.

If the admin team here had done what some have suggested, and simply changed the rules, there are people who would have felt cheated and angry, and probably have left.

All credit to them for not taking that autocratic approach.

Now people have to either split their time over the 2 forums, or make their own choice as to where they want to be.

Personally, I'll try out the TZ, as it suits me to have an environment that's a bit more controlled. I don't want to have to argue the toss, for eg, as to whether some snivelling little shit stirrer should be allowed to rip round the place with the sole intention of making snidey, veiled comments about other members. Balls to that! If others don't mind it, then bully for them. They get to hang on to the trolls, and enjoy the pleasure of their company, whilst making noble speeches about 'freedom of speech'. It ain't what I log on for.

@gilly - gotta agree with you - some of my favourite posters and i have utterly different views on many subjects - I adore frog for example and respect him a great deal but we disagree entirely about fmotl - mandy who I just want to visit and lavish tea and cakes on whilst admiring 'that' jumper and i are complete opposites when it comes to religion - I think anarchy is a positively awful prospect but adore our sz anarchists.

This is the strength of the sz imho - that we can all hold different views so long as those views are presented respectfully and are treated respectfully.

Having different views is a good thing - how bland and uninspiring the world would be if we didnt have people passionate about differing subjects - how little progress would be made if we didnt 'buck against the system'.

A troll for me is someone incapable of showing respect - for individual members or for the site itself - we can all be guilty of trollish behaviour when our views are challenged or when we do not feel respected. It is one of the hardest things in the world to hold a perspective and yet respect others right to disagree. The pattern I have seen here and other places is that things break down when respect is lost. In many cases it is easier to remove the problem rather then attempt to reason with it a without that fundamental respect no amount of reasoning will have any positive effect.

We at the sz are in part our greatest strength and in part our greatest weakness - we attempt to be a change - that not everyone will want or be ready for - which in turn leads us to become more like that we wish to distance ourselves from - it is a weird world we live in thats for sure.
