Abs made me run away? Hah, in a pig's eye he did, lol! Firstly, I'm physically incapable of actually running anywhere, and secondly, it was time for me tea and to spend a bit of quality time with OH! (We had cottage pie and green beans - very nice - and then watched a bit of telly!) :larf:

Anyway, back to the zombies...I'm old enough to remember Michael Jackson's Thriller when it came out! :oldfart: We all thought it was the bee's-knees at the time... :emb:

Im guessing sword, axe etc are the best options? They wont look as good on film as strimmer & fire but in practice maybe better. Lots to think about.

My personal view on this is that technically, yes, they are already dead. However, the nature of zombification means that there is some element that is animating whatever is left of muscle and neural function. That said, their physical makeup is already dead and decomposing.

How long does it take a corpse to rot sufficiently that it would not be able to support it's own weight walking, running or crawling? Even then though, once seperated from the head, we are told that the body becomes quite harmless, not receiving those fake zombie impulses from whatever is infesting the brain, if indeed that's where 'it' is.

What is not really focused on so much, is that if the brain is the cause of the zombie state, the head will go on (biting and chewing) until such a time as its own muscle tissue and structure has completely disingtegrated. Hence, "shoot them in the head"...

Lot's to think about Dom.

Personally, I quite like your loft idea, but again, you've broken a golden rule by telling us all here. If just one of us knows your actual location, we may very well remember post-death and lead the rest directly to your 'safe zone'. You really must start thinking about these things.

Have been doing some further research following Dom's important question on longevity and came across this very insightful piece on classification:
Zombie Classifications

Alien Zombies (Zombus Xenus)
This species of possessed zombie is typically used by aliens as a means of warfare. The body is either inhabited by an alien intellect, or controlled indirectly.

Biological Zombies (Zombus Biologicus)
These zombies are re-animated by some form of chemical. Application of the chemical restores some basic brain functions, and occasionally memories of previous lives. Zombies of this type appear to have suffered some sort of mental defect which pre-disposes them to misanthropy and cannibalism. There is a variant of Biological Zombie where the re-animation is introduced through a disease-bearing pathogen of some sort. In these cases, anyone who has caught the pathogen will become a zombie after they are dead.

Demon Zombies (Zombus Demonicus)
This second species of possessed zombie behaves under basically the same principles as the Alien Zombie, except that the intent is usually more malicious in nature, with no clear purpose other than to cause suffering.

Electrical Zombies (Zombus Electricus)
This re-animation of this rare species of zombie is brought about by applying a large electrical charge to a corpse. Bolts of lightning provide sufficient charge, but there are further intricacies involved which have prevented this type of zombie from being common. The only persons able to reliably produce Electrical Zombies were Baron Frankenstein and one of his descendants.

Mummified Zombies (Zombus Mummificus)
Ancient Egyptians mummified their dead, and then placed curses to take vengeance on those who disturbed the tomb. This combination has been known to produce re-animation in rare cases. Attempts to reproduce the curses have not been successful, so this re-animation is very uncommon and difficult to study.

Radioactive Zombies (Zombus Atomicus)
Radiation has also been known to restore basic brain function to corpses. The resulting zombie is very similar to the Biological Zombie. There are those that argue that these two zombie types are the same species, and that the manner of re-animation is irrelevant. This continues to be a divisive issue in zombology today.

Satanic Zombies (Zombus Satanicus)
These zombies are re-animated by powers that are satanic in origin, such as from a ritual read from a book of dark magic. They are distinct from Demonic Zombies in that these zombies have self-will, and are not merely possessed shells. They are typically malevolent in nature. Those who cast the spell of re-animation are sometimes in control of the zombies, but more often than not, the zombies merely awaken and begin wreaking havoc.

Voodoo Zombies (i) (Zombus Caribbeanus Mortis)
Zombies from this species are closely related to Satanic Zombies. Magic is still used in the re-animation process, but the power stems from a human agent who has much more control over the zombies after they come alive. For those who wish to produce zombies, this has been established as the most effective method, simply because the zombies will almost always do the bidding of their creator.

Voodoo Zombies (ii) (Zombus Caribbeanus Vivus)
There is a variant of Voodoo Zombie where the zombie is produced from a living person, usually through the forced consumption of mind-destroying drugs. These zombies are relatively useless in combat, since they are both slow-moving and can be killed like a normal living person. For menial household chores, though, they are quite useful.

Still doesn't really tell us how long your average species will be mobile for though. I'll keep looking. :secret:

Every time you move, it puts wear and tear on your muscles. As living beings, our muscles heal from this damage as quickly as it occurs. That's how muscle-building exercises work: They step up the wear and tear on your muscles, so that when they heal they grow back bigger and stronger.

Zombies traditionally don't heal, so they wouldn't benefit like we do from moving around. Instead of repairing the wear and tear on their muscles, they would eventually just work their own bodies to destruction. I honestly don't think most zombies would last a full month in any environment.

Damp environments would make them rot faster, adding to how quickly they break down. Dry environments would preserve them from rotting, but it would weaken the muscles and cause them to break down from use much faster. So this is just a guess, but I'd say a month or less would end up being the average zombie lifespan.

If you want to get *really* realistic, then maybe a few days since dehydrated muscles cease to function and zombies don't drink.

We're getting closer...

I'd like to add to the zombie classification chart. :D

The nano zombie:

Tiny nano robots infect the body of a human host. They use the iron content of human blood, muscle tissue, and the magnetite in the human brain for replication. While active in the body, they attach themselves to the nerves, muscle tissue, and brain of the human host. They then take control via electromagnet pulse discharges, and controlling chemical releases of the brain and adrenal glands. As a result they would be faster and stronger than normal humans, and feel little to no pain because of high distributed doses of endorphins. Unlike other zombies that have weak human teeth that wouldn't realistically be able to successfully chew through bones, this zombie would be able to. The Nanites would congregate around the jaw and teeth, acting as a protective metallic shield. This would increase the chances for a bite to infect a new host as well.

These nanites would be very similar to a highly infectious virus, and would need to find a new host frequently. The depletion of iron, magnetite, muscle stress, and bone stress would mean this zombie would have a short 'life-span', probably a week or two at best. This could also possibly be filed under the 'alien zombie'.

As for what I would carry in a zombie survival kit...

A machete - close quarters defense/quiet attack
A light and reliable handgun for 'oh shit' situations.
A bow and arrows for quite long distance shots - It may not be just zombies you're contending with.
A crowbar
A pocket chainsaw for quiet and effective cutting - better than an ax or hatchet.
First aid kit
Water purification kit
Fishing line, hooks, and lures - can also be used to stitch up wounds in a pinch
Waterproof wild herbs and veggies guide
Flint and tinder
Space blankets
Extra socks
Form is merely a momentary manifestation of being, not a fixed reality.

Dearest sir,

I HATE space blankets as they are foil and thus loudly crinkly - especially when there is a leak in the tent roof that drips upon said space blanket - I don't care what the astronauts took with them to the moon; I hate Tang, too!

I agree with the extra socks suggestion, however. I wish to further suggest an extra couple of rolls of toilet paper, and if we have learned nothing else, a towel.

Blasphemer! How could anyone not want to look like a giant burrito to a zombie?! On a serious note, they compact well and it doesn't really matter if they get wet. That's the only reason I would want them. Other than that, I don't like them either.

I think I'd probably just raid a bank and use the paper money as toilet paper. That's about all it would be good for at that point anyway. :D

Also, have a look at these. :) They're very cool burrow beds for your pup friend that you can make for less than half the cost. :)

Anyway, I used stoopit space blankets 30 years ago during my 'training' to get used to life after the Russians pressed the button - who could get any sleep with that aluminum foil over them, and it was STILL too damn cold! I don't care what anybody said!!

Oh, BTW, time has taught that even NOBODY liked space blankets, so it wasn't just me.

Had to wait bloody 30 years years...grumble...grumble....grumble.

wow Im learning so much about zombies here!
Btw no one knows where I live so its okay, I would rather take my chances with the zombies than hand out address details to ex-DIF riff-raff (just kidding guys)

Regarding life span, lets say a well fed zombie can last a month. Within that month there will be survivors getting bitten, and they will go on to bite others, so It could go on for months or years. Babies will be born in that time too, and they will go on to be freaky little mini zombies. So i think its important to be able to avoid detection and to be safe and comfortable somewhere. The novelty of slaying zombies will wear off after a while anyway, so I will want to have a good supply of reading material to pass the time until the planet is ready to be reclaimed.

Another question if i may - does anyone know how the zombies distinguish the living from the undead? I mean, if you really needed to get somewhere, but every street was full of zombies, could a convincing zombie-mask enable you safe passage? Perhaps you would need to copy their mannerisms too, but it might work.

The great thing about this thread, is much of the advice is relevant in other scenarios too.
I mean, in the case of financial armageddon all the above tools will come in handy, and even the flame thrower might be needed at times too.

That pocket chainsaw looks good - im going to get me one of those, so thanks for the link.
