If I'm in work I'm not entitled to medical cards of any type at all because I earn too much (and lets face it, thats not difficult with those figures for means tested cards).

If I'm out of work then I'm means tested and so long as I have bugger all savings and I'm on welfare then it's medical card time innit :)

I think you might need to read the stats again. Its a common misconception that all those who claim dole get medical cards. They dont, and its not because of savings. Its because the income guidelines would be above the ceiling allowed.

Married or cohabiting couple (or lone parent with dependent children) €266.50 The jobseekers rate for a married couple would be above this, so they may not qualify for a medical card. So its not medical card time innit for them.

Job Seekers Allowance is only for those who have enough NI paid up Gris.
Otherwise you're means tested, of course if you have kids you would easily be well within the limits shown which harks back to what I said about being better off on the dole IF YOU HAVE KIDS ;)

No, you are getting confused again Andy, you need to find out about the qualification for jobseekers allowance, its nothing to do with stamps. You are confusing it with jobseekers benefit. Jobseekers benefit is paid when you have enough stamps, and are seeking work. Jobseekers allowance is means tested for payment. Getting either does not automatically qualify you for any other allowances, as they are all means tested now.
If you qualify in your own right for a medical card, and your partner/spouse works a small amount of part time hours, that will disqualify you from a card. Equally if you had a loan for a car lets say of 30 euro a week prior to claiming for a medical card, it wont be regarded as out goings in a claim, even though you have disposable income far below the qualification rate because of the loan. There are many criteria that will disqualify you from obtaining medical assistence if you find your self on benefits.

Again like I said before...you're better off on the dole (both parents) if you have kids as you obviously DO qualify for a medical card in that instance do you not? :)

You do know how much VHI is for a family yep?

Also where have I said that doleys are 'living it up' exactly?

I have said that you ARE better off on the dole if you have kids and you earn the average wage or below.
There is little point in being in work unless it pays a decent living wage, this is the whole reason why I got in to self employment in the first place...

You are better off on the dole, as opposed to what level of salary, location ect. Thats a generalisation surely.
Correct me if I,m wrong here. If you are a self employed businessman, you get to do your own tax assessmnet, to your own benefit, by making sure you pay fek all into the system, that others have paid into. You get to hold vat back on all the household items you buy, that bear no relation ship to the business, that those on paye dont get to do.

You have not said exactly that doleys are living it up. But your posts give the impression that life on the dole is financially better than a job on an average salary. Its not in my opinion.

It is better given the official report I linked in the OP which looks at single earner rural families with PAYE employed average earners, which lets face it, is a lot of ppl right?

They're hardly going to include self employed jetsetters on half a million a year with a swiss bank account ffs lol :)

If the bloke who is a single earner on say 30 odd k, drives 50 miles in to work every bleedin day and pays for the petrol out of his own pocket and drives a few hundred quid banger and then has to feed a wife and kids and ALSO doesn't get any welfare benefit or medical card at all loses his job which he only managed to hold on to for less than a year (just like he did with a load of other jobs) then gets out of work again and gets housing benefit and a medical card and the means tested allowance then he's going to find himself querying why he bothers isn't he?

I hope that makes sense because it paints a picture of a lot of men imho :)

I don't want to slag off doleys at all, in fact imho good on em! If everyone did that or better still found a way to go self employed then we'd see a lot of worried politicians and big businessmen.

BTW, you can't manage to 'dodge' tax as a self employed person unless you either:
1) Earn very little anyway and do your own accounting (totally legal not dodging anything)
or
2) Earn shitloads and have non domicile status (this is legal but its thin ice)
or
3) Are a director and deliberately pay yourself a low salary (again legal but some WTF questions are gonna get asked)

There are still some taxes that are unavoidable, road tax for starters :)

Tax does not go to welfare recipients anyway, it goes to pay bloody bankers and bomb the crap out of brown ppl so I dunno why you're worried about it being paid :D

BTW, you can’t manage to ‘dodge’ tax as a self employed person unless you either

Tax avoidance then, it amounts to the same thing ;)
If you advertised a job on average wage, I,d guarantee you would be inundated with calls. But business,s dont have to do that anymore,as the government has forced the unemployed to become the new serfs for the corporate vultures. And lests be honest, if you had the choice of paying a grad 30k a year or nowt, you,d chose nowt. So your bottom line would balance heavily in your favour.

As to the ESRI report, its from a government body ffs, what else do you expect them to tell you. Isn,t this the same government that told us of the 645 million euro dole fraud, and it turned out to be this.
debates.oireachtas.ie/dail/2012/04/25/00014.asp.

I take any report from the government with a pinch of salt. A decent paying job is better than anytime spent on the dole. I,ve driven 200 mile round trip for 2 years for the average rate of pay. Some will, some wont.

Did you bring the well with you when you moved :D

Jesus no, if its a small biz contractor then it's not tax avoidance at all because expenses are completely legit.
The only problem here for want of a better word is that the poor PAYE worker doesn't get any expenses allowed at all!
How is it tax avoidance if its in the rules in black and white on the tax return form? :D

Absolutely yep! I wouldn't argue with that at all...nor have I :)

Sometimes they DO get it right and in this instance they have :)
The average joe as single earner on average salary who lives rurally according to the report is most definitely hardly worth bothering, the 30k in that instance IS slave labor because he's not saving any pennies, he's getting nothing for his effort at all.
The fact that many will still do it just goes to show how dumb they are :)
Did you bring the well with you when you moved :D

Every single Tax return I've filled in is complete, frank and if the IR want to audit me, I'll even make them a cuppa or ten whilst they do it. I've not hidden earnings from them, played any tax tricks or falsified receipts. It's all 100% above board.

I bring in enough fiat to enable me to keep a place to live, a car and provide a few luxuries like tinterweb. I don't ask for much physical stuff and I don't mind making do and mending. In fact I thrive on it.

I declare expenses and as a result of how I run my life, the IR get fek all from me. Do I feel bad about not paying Income Tax?
Do I fek? In fact I urge everyone else to minimise the amount the gov take direct from your labours as well. When in Rome and all that.

Of course, I pay tax in other ways, just like everyone else that still engages with the economy. I make voluntary donations when I can to services that I feel are essential.

Am I a bad man gris? Is all this tax dodging?

Those that work for themselves and save the need for fiat are the only free agents when.they ply their crafts, especially if the materials are recycled, the more skills you have and machinery that runs without electricity for yourself the more able you are.

Farmets make the best self surfs of all because they ply their model using nature to give them the other 50%, it is wholely possible to live without money elsewhere if enough people ply their crafts with each other, they cannot tax themselves.

But if you going to attempt this model get good at several different hand skills first, as the years go by it gets easier.

That emboldened bit. +10 trillion. That's exactly how I'd like to see as many of us go as possible. Out here we still very much have an unwritten code that is akin to "you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours". Farmers for example just do it as a matter of course. Labour/plant/skills/resources, all pushed around as needed among the community. Everyone understands that the whole is best served by a co-operative approach. (Well nearly everyone. We tracked down the thief of our brassicas to a local 'farmer' a couple of years ago. He was taking them by night and selling them via honesty box by day. It was sorted the country way).

As you say as diverse range of skills as possible is the ideal. Both in the fiat world and the more desirable one. In the fiat world for example, I HAVE to be able to turn a hand to many things. I may get called upon to do some felling/logging, hedging, tractor driving, digging of poly tunnels, kitchen fitting, roof repair, bodywork, fabrication, cripes the list goes on. I even do removals on occasion (yes, there IS a skill to it)! I don't like saying to people, "no sorry I can't do that, call the next bloke". Neither does Ms dub like me doing it ;).

Yer its nice to be able to do all sorts of things.
If you're the flighty sort who ends up doing a wide range of jobs from a young age its only to your advantage I suppose.
I've been a mechanic, a welder, a bus driver, an electrician, a cleaning biz and many other things all long before I got in to the IT biz.

Hahahaha, I remember me ole da used to say to me "you need to knuckle down and get a trade son" regularly whilst I flitted from here to there. Dad! It's stood me in good stead! I may not have a big house and a shiny Chelsea tractor but I can look after myself and on the whole I'm pretty content ;)

i do worry because my son is coming to the end of his further education and does not have the slightest scoobie what he wants to do

He may have to 'sign on' and claim Jobseekers come July.

He is applying for jobs left right and centre , but nothing is happening.

He has a casual job in his uncles cafe but has already said he hates working for people and wants to his own boss.
