The Government has announced legislation which will lead to a huge expansion of surveillance powers of communications on the internet and mobile phones.
The Communications and Data Bill will allow the police and security services to keep track of who is calling who on mobile phones, the email addresses of all correspondents, and the personal IDs of people chatting on social networking sites.

.... there might be some dark chocolate candy bar shavings present at some point as well.... *to be continued*

"If you are innocent then you have nothing to fear. Only criminals should fear this legislation," said Mrs May.

Yes, she really said it, she actually said it

*goes off to buy a quill and parchment from ebay*
the personal IDs of people chatting on social networking sites.

Just how do they propose to get this information?

Will the people who run these sites be forced to hand over these details? Will forums such as this be required eventually to do so?

This is the kind of shit that REALLY gets me wound up... I will never be easy to deal with when I cross these paths. That much I do know.

Communist Bitch.

You bastard! How could you leave me at the end of my confectionery seat?! :aargh: :nono: :D

On a more serious note, I recall a case where someone reported being denied access to Canada because they said that they didn't have any aliases. The patrol officer for the Canadian boarder listed some forum internet handle the guy used several years before, a site the guy hadn't been to in years. Creepy.

Anyway, I said it ages ago, irrepressible is not a name, it's an adjective  (I don't really know about adjectives and verbs and nouns and stuff :emb:)

Reminds of an apocalyptic indie movie I saw. Non corporate approved GMO seeds were against the law, and a majority of people lived in a barren landscape, fallout style. The rich lived in walled in cities. The main character's father was killed by seed enforcers when he refused to hand over heirloom seeds. It wasn't a terribly great movie, but it had an interesting plot. Wish I could remember the name of it...

Honestly, I wouldn't be too shocked if there were smart toilets in the not too distant future. Novum and I had a pretty good discussion on water regulation, and the intentionally created 'droughts'. If there's something to be charged and taxed, they'll do it. I wouldn't be surprised if there were water regulation meters placed on toilets to 'help with the climate change induced droughts'.

I was just about to ask the name of the film indy :chuckle: It sounds interesting. I think they'd love to have "privilege credits" instead of money.

And "amenity credits". Working for basic sanitation and that kind of thing. That's just me and my fertile imagination though :chuckle:
It's all about control and rationing. How many toilet flushes will they give us per day?

It's not too far fetched to think they'd have the balls and the insane evilness to try it.

i posted this link a few times before
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narus_%28company%29#NarusInsight

NarusInsight
System specification and capabilities

Some features of NarusInsight include:[10]

Scalability to support surveillance of large, complex IP networks (such as the Internet)
High-speed Packet processing performance, which enables it to sift through the vast quantities of information that travel over the Internet.
Normalization, Correlation, Aggregation and Analysis provide a model of user, element, protocol, application and network behaviors, in real-time. That is it can track individual users, monitor which applications they are using (e.g. web browsers, instant messaging applications, email) and what they are doing with those applications (e.g. which web sites they have visited, what they have written in their emails/IM conversations), and see how users' activities are connected to each other (e.g. compiling lists of people who visit a certain type of web site or use certain words or phrases in their emails).
High reliability from data collection to data processing and analysis.
NarusInsight's functionality can be configured to feed a particular activity or IP service such as security, lawful intercept or even Skype detection and blocking.
Compliance with CALEA and ETSI.
Certified by Telecommunication Engineering Center (TEC) in India for lawful intercept and monitoring systems for ISPs.

The intercepted data flows into NarusInsight Intercept Suite. This data is stored and analyzed for surveillance and forensic analysis purposes.

Other capabilities include playback of streaming media (i.e. VoIP), rendering of web pages, examination of e-mail and the ability to analyze the payload/attachments of e-mail or file transfer protocols. Narus partner products, such as Pen-Link, offer the ability to quickly analyze information collected by the Directed Analysis or Lawful Intercept modules.

A single NarusInsight machine can monitor traffic equal to the maximum capacity (10 Gbit/s) of around 39,000 DSL lines or 195,000 telephone modems. But, in practical terms, since individual internet connections are not continually filled to capacity, the 10 Gbit/s capacity of one NarusInsight installation enables it to monitor the combined traffic of several million broadband users.

According to a company press release, the latest version of NarusInsight Intercept Suite (NIS) is "the industry's only network traffic intelligence system that supports real-time precision targeting, capturing and reconstruction of webmail traffic... including Google Gmail, MSN Hotmail and Yahoo! Mail" [11]

It can also perform semantic analysis of the same traffic as it is happening, in other words analyze the content, meaning, structure and significance of traffic in real time. The exact use of this data is not fully documented, as the public is not authorized to see what types of activities and ideas are being monitored.

It's also worth noting that they have probably been 'able' to do a lot of this stuff for years. It's only now, as was planned imo, they have reason and guise with which to bring it in to legislation, so if anybody should turn around and say "hang on a minute, you bunch of bastards" they can be slammed back in place with it.

There may also be a modicum of 'mongering' with this stuff too. Who knows how advanced surveillance actually is, so scaring people into flying straight might be useful as a back-up, if nothing else.

I wanna see sketters dragged kicking and screaming from her witches cave on the moors though, for her all too frequent interwebz indiscretions and "terriorist" tendancies.
What we are today comes from our thoughts of yesterday, and our present thoughts build our life of tomorrow: Our life is the creation of our mind.

Follow the pea .........
Officials said that judicial oversight of surveillance was not possible because "there simply aren't enough magistrates".
No warrant would be required for these surveillance operations, which would need to be authorised by a "senior officer", Whitehall sources said.
A warrant, issued by the Home Secretary, would be needed to access the content of communications.
So there's simply not enough magistrates but a few senior officers and the Home Secretary can handle it no problem.
:shlap:
And there will be no collection of data in real time," the official added.
His last text was to another paedophile saying that he wanted to take and rape another child and eat it. I dread to think what could happen if we cannot move fast against these sorts of people," Mr Beautridge said.
This article was obviously intended for people who can't read.
