warning, slightly disgusting content.

I ask for an important reason, today mine had lots of poo stuck to her feathers around her vent, I've noticed sometimes that it gets stuck and she kicks it off but this was really hard and difficult to shift and there was a lot of it. I had to do it myself, took her to the sink and used some warmish water to loosen it from her feathers. It was horrble and disgusting and I don't know how I didn't throw up, she didn't enjoy the experience much either. I'm positive it's not because of anything medical going wrong with her, she's very perky and happy to have a clean behind now so I would like to avoid a trip to the vets. I'm sure it's a problem with her feathers in that area being too long because of her breeding (she's an English budgie).

The question is does anyone know if there is anything I can do to stop this happening again? Should I trim her feathers (which I don't think she'll like and I don't want to stress her too much one a regular basis) or take her to a vet anyway to see if they know what to do? Or is this just something that will happen from time to time?

I think I'm worrying over nothing because it was a bit of an ordeal for both of us, the best way I've found of stopping my anxiety running riot is to be proactive and find a solution or at least sound other people out, hence me asking here. I might hit some budgie forums and ask a breeder if nobody here knows, it's probably a bit of a specialized question.

Sorry I don't know anything about budgies but it may be worthwhile contacting your local pet store and inquiring whether these are available in smaller sizes.

Sorry I can't help with your budgie problem, but I do hope you get the advice you need. Incidentally, my (late) grandma used to keep budgies - bizarrely, she called them all Bobby!

One of my nieces is a veterinary nurse , I'll drop her text, she'll be at work so might not get a reply for a bit?

Have you been using scented candles? The reason I ask is because these can really upset the digestive system of small birds and make them all mucusy?

Strangely I have a weird bobby budgie story, we inherited a budgie from an old lady, she'd had it for years, it was a boy, it was called bobby, after about a month of mixing with the two we already had it's nose turned brown, meaning it was a girl. My vet is an avian specialist (I previously had a bird with chronic egg laying and didn't trust a none specialist to deal with it) and they don't do phone consults, you have to book an appointment. I could try phoning the pets at home vet, I think they might do over the phone things.

I haven't, I'm aware of that problem, but I don't know if my mum has, it's possible. I know how bad fumes are for little animals but mum possibly didn't think.

She's ok, I think she's fallen out with me though. She has her hubby to fuss over her and my two splendid parakeets to be bossy with, she's the head of my little flock.

I think I might have tracked it down, she's in breeding condition (her nose is very brown which means she's in the mood to make babies) and that can make a female do really big poos, so perhaps the build up was more than she could cope with. Still keeping an eye on things. Hoping she won't start laying eggs.

(Strange about your "transsexual budgie", BTW - I've never heard anything like it! We once had a male cat called Nancy - we thought he was a female until the vet informed us otherwise, but by then the name Nancy had stuck, lol! )
