Why not just throw them on an incinerator and be done with it?

Obese and unhealthy people could face benefit cuts

Smart cards could be used to monitor claimants' use of gyms, and those who do not exercise could be penalised

Obese and other unhealthy people could be monitored to check whether they are taking exercise and have their benefits cut if they fail to do so under proposals published on Thursday by a Conservative-run council and a local government thinktank.

Westminster council and the Local Government Information Unit say new technologies such as smart cards could be used to track claimants' use of leisure centres, allowing local authorities to dock housing and council benefit payments from those who refuse to carry out exercise prescribed by their GP.

The report, A Dose of Localism: the Role of Councils in Public Health, precedes the transfer in April of responsibility for community wellbeing and public health from the NHS to local authorities.

The proposals address how councils can meet the financial challenges posed by their new public health function amid rising levels of obesity and major budget cuts. The report suggests linking benefit payments to claimants' lifestyles, and notes that some councils have introduced schemes allowing GPs to prescribe exercise at swimming pools, yoga, gyms and walking clubs.

"Where an exercise package is prescribed to a resident, housing and council tax benefit payments could be varied to reward or incentivise residents," the authors state.

A Westminster council spokesman said the proposal would have to involve a "carrot and stick" approach.

Obesity increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart and liver disease and some cancers, making it a major financial burden on the NHS – £5.1bn per year, according to the Department of Health.

In England, 24% of men and 26% of women are obese, while 65% of men and 58% of women are either overweight or obese, according to the latest edition of the Health Survey for England.

I'd like to see some of the people I've seen working in Jobcentres accuse others of being obese that would be an interesting conversation.
The true measure of a man is not his intelligence or how high he rises in this freak establishment. The true measure of a man is this: how quickly he can respond to the needs of others and how much of himself he can give - Philip K. Dick.

Oh and don't be thinking his dept spent £10,000 on snacks. Oh, no, no, no :nono:
They've spent an EXTRA £10,000 in the last 7 months.

The Communities and Local Government office blew £42,225 of taxpayers’ cash on snacks in just seven months.
That’s more than £10,000 higher than the bill for snacks at meetings in the previous year.

I think it's about more than money. It's about getting away with controlling and victimising groups of people. Who knows what extent they're willing to go to - allowing people to be put on the street & starve to death if they no longer 'qualify' for benefits & can't get work doesn't seem unlikely.

And what really winds me up is that there will probably be many of the brainwashed public giving the authorities a round of applause for it.

I wonder if this will push people to visit their GP's in search of those nasty fat-binding diet pills. I'm going to look at those when not pushed for time, and check out which organs they probably damage irreparably. That's just an assumption on my part btw - I say nasty, because I suspect they dispell nutrients from the gut along with fat, and I know the fat is reputed to leak from the back passage. And the pharmaceutical companies will be rubbing their blood-soaked hands together in morbid glee.

Isn't being morbidly obese and unhealthy the reason people get benefits?

As mental as it is, it does actually have a perverse appeal.

1/Unemployed forced into gym, get ultra-fit, develop huge muscles

2/Unemployed form army of Herculean superbeings

3//Unemployed tear Eric Pickles and his department apart with their bare hands

4/Unemployed appropriate Eric Pickles' huge stash of biscuits, eat them, become obese again in peace.

5/Country celebrates an end to Eric Pickle, erects monument to obese unemployed people.

Didn't Charlie Brooker predict this in Black Mirror? The one where you earn 'credits' for exercising/generating electricity.

Well if the people concerned have an aversion to going to the gym, or it's too far to walk to & the bus fare's prohibitive, they can get thin by having their income cut so that they can't afford as much food!

It's infuriating that these kinds of reports so very often come with unclear, yet very probably misleading figures. Such as...

"Obesity increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart and liver disease and some cancers, making it a major financial burden on the NHS – £5.1bn per year, according to the Department of Health."

It's word-play, making it appear that the good old, trusty government are going to make fat people thin & save us £5.1 BILLION pounds! Whooppeee!

But I think they're not.

That 'major financial burden' that they're now making appear to be the fault of fat benefits recipients will possibly be the cost associated with all those stated illnesses, regardless of whether or not obesity was an associated factor (it only specifies that it can increase the risks) and including patients who don't claim benefits. And if that's not the case, then it should be stated very clearly and emphatically that it's solely obese benefits claimants who have been taken into account in that calculation.

And why the fuck can those robbing, greedy tw@s like Pickles be allowed to have expenses like that!?!
*That last bit was rhetorical - I do that often, and am always vaguely irritated when people answer :D *
