I think it was Jane's use of this actually: :scotty:

Jane's fault again. :coffee:

To me :scotty: kind of embodies  :dunno: :chin: :bla: :gmc: all at the same time.

Maybe that's just me though :scotty:

Anyway, on topic... very interesting that meteor. I've never seen anything like that before, and if something that small can be pretty dramatic stuff, the glow, the speed, the deafening roar, think about what a serious lump of space debris could do. Doesn't bear thinking about.

I find it slightly odd the man who caught the footage in his car camera

a) started filming just before it came into view (exceptionally lucky timing)

b) acted so composed and kept driving towards it

I'd have been running as far I could in the opposite direction that my little car or legs could take me

I understand from a news report that dash cams are quite 'de rigeur' in Russia. Apparently people have them to record their corrupt police when stopped! :O

But would you not have turned your car around and run as fast as could in the opposite direction?

Hard to say Dawney. Looking at the trajectory of it, as the driver was, then no, probably not.
Plus, was it two way traffic or a dual carriageway? Either way there was a lot of traffic on the road....so a rather 'locked and loaded' situation.

There was a story a few years back when Liverpool played an away match in Russia, and a few fans were mugged... by the police :O

So was this meteorite part of the big one we just had a close shave with?

:emb: I'm often guilty of skimming over threads :chuckle:

I've been around, here, there, watching :hmm: :D

I will take a look at the thread proper soon. This meteorite was a pretty significant event really, well for me it was, like I said, I've never seen anything like it. And also has the meteorite been recovered by the authorities? Maybe that info is somewhere on the thread :emb:

Correction...it was meant to fly past and not hit, which it did do as predicted.

What was not noticed was the smaller rock coming in front of it. ;)

What doesn't happen often enough is that one of them drops on a politicians head.

WOW! That's colosal! :O I'll be looking into the background of that one, especially given the size of it compared to the buildings on its south side!

Anyways, I came back on just to report that more meteors/fireballs have now been seen over Miami. It's just breaking news.
I know we had our own over Manchester at the end of last year (I posted Tris' vid of it on here somewhere). But these darn things are getting a bit too frequent for comfort now. Yes I appreciate more and more people are paying attention and that could contribute to the increase in reporting. But to be honest...I don't think so.

The rock that hit it was only about 50 yards across iirc.
Perhaps 3 times the size of the one that blew up over russia recently.
It'll have been iron+nickel to hit the deck.
