!

There are also reports of militery craft being scrambled to asses the damage, also to survey the area for "nuclear and other material" :O
This is all very possible....I will keep looking to see if this is correct.

Would one of you be kind enough to explain to me the difference between an asteroid and a meteor?

An asteroid is a gert rock that flies around space :)
(usually the term applies to objects within the solar system hence the term 'asteroid belt a meteoroid by comparison for example would be an extra solar body - from outside the solar system)

A meteor is one which enters the atmosphere of a planet, a meteorite is one which not only enters the atmosphere but which also manages to hit the ground.

[quoteArmy units found three meteorite debris impact sites, two of which are in an area near Chebarkul Lake, west of Chelyabinsk. The third site was found some 80 kilometers further to the northwest, near the town of Zlatoust. One of the fragments that struck near Chebarkul left a crater six meters in diameter.
Servicemembers from the tank brigade that found the crater have confirmed that background radiation levels at the site are normal.
Russian space agency Roskosmos has confirmed the object that crashed in the Chelyabinsk region is a meteorite:
“According to preliminary estimates, this space object is of non-technogenic origin and qualifies as a meteorite. It was moving at a low trajectory with a speed of about 30 km/s.”According to estimates by the Russian Academy of Sciences, the space object weighed about 10 tons before entering Earth’s atmosphere.

As of 15:00 Moscow time, 725 people have sought medical attention in Chelyabinsk alone because of the disaster, 112 of whom have been hospitalized, of them two in heavy condition. Among the injured there are 159 children, Emergency ministry reported.

Here's some info on Moldavite...just one type of tektite/meteorite
www.moldavites.co.uk/

Personally, I can't go near it...makes me physically sick, truly. My friend who had a piece even tried catching me out when she visited by not telling me she had it with her. I knew 100% on each occasion. She very kindly stopped 'testing' me! :D

They almost always break up and explode in the atmosphere on entry, you then get small 'bits' when you find them on the ground.
They're worth a fair bit of money actually if you can find em.

I have a lump of coal and when I wash it it comes up shining like diamonds with very unusual patterns

I don't think there is that much meteorite in the world ............I know alot of people in Edinburgh who bought/own a bit of meteorite multiply that by a gizzilion worldwide and it would appear that many many many people have a bit of metorite?

If the last one hit the earth in 1902 where has all this meteorite stuff come from

Hehe :)
They impact every day all over the planet, sometimes several times a day.
They're usually too small to be noticed, again its a bit like earthquakes. Its not something we really take much notice of until its a big badaboom. Technology such as modern comms and internet though do increase the likelihood of noticing them.

Glass can be in a meteorite yes, depends if it has silicon in it when it falls, if so then its going to get heated in to glass.

So how can you tell if the bit of stone/rock you pick up is a metorite?

Ahaaa...good question :)

They'll usually have a leatherlike fusion crust on the surface. Many of the ones that make it down are iron so you can use a metal detector to find quite a few.

I saw a documentary about these two American blokes who went around searching for metorites. They used metal detectors and dug them out of the ground. They went hunting in the huge areas of open farm land somewhere in the US. They dug up one that they reckon would fetch about $40,000. People will pay for the rare minerals. It was what they did to earn a crust.

I think there are signs that they look out for so they can identify the genuine meteorites.

These are the guys.
