Baby boy dies in harrowing birth at Belfast's Royal Victoria Hospital

A distressed father has called for an inquest into his baby boy's death after he witnessed his harrowing birth at Belfast's Royal Victoria Hospital, according to UTV.

Patrick McCormick and his partner Louise had been told their son had only a five per cent chance of survival, due to trapped fluid in his stomach.

But they could never have foreseen the traumatic birth Mr McCormick would witness in the delivery room on Monday evening.

As medics delivered their baby, the child's head came away from his body.

Tearfully recalling the events to UTV, Mr McCormick said: "(Louise) asked me Paddy, can I hold him? I said no love you can't hold him.

"And I had to sit.. and I had to go through every detail with her."

The Belfast Trust said it believes the boy was clinically dead at the point of delivery.

A spokeswoman said: "We do not underestimate how painful this situation is for them.

"This has also been a harrowing time for our staff who, throughout a very unusual set of circumstances, have endeavoured to give the best possible care.

"They will continue to take all possible steps to help and support this family in the coming weeks."

A post mortem is due to be carried out.

:(
I can't imagine anyone (parents or staff), leaving that room without having been indelibly traumatised.

Thank you for sharing oi, but I wonder if this really constitutes 'news'. I know that's a flimsy term these days, but I should of thought common decency would prevent anyone from running this story, even if only until the post-mortem.

If it has come from the family themselves then it's different, but otherwise - what the fuck?

Funnily enough I was pondering just this point t'other night after seeing some of what passes for news here, a 10 minute segment on which top footballer is dating who! Perhaps a discussion for elsewhere though.

I'm a bit sheltered from it all, tbh - entirely my own doing. Can't remember the last time I actually watched the news or read a newspaper but it just struck me as an odd thing to a) write a story about or b) want the media to know anything about.

Grief does weird shit though, so... :dunno:

I think that might depend on whether it was a really unusual and unavoidable that went wrong, or it was down to utter ineptitude on the part of the hospital staff.

Either way, it's horrific and terribly sad. My heart goes out to those parents.
