Hi Dante :)

I wrote this today on the Red Cross UK thread. It was meant to explain what I have gathered about the right wing on the level of Tory Mps and voters.

Does anyone still believe that the return to pre WW2 standards of depravation is a consequence of the policies of the last three decades?

I can assure you that it is the main aim and that this can be found explicitly declared so.

The post-war dream and the vital liberties, rights and services that were hard won by the great generations of the first half of the twentieth Century that you and I consider the very hallmark of a civilised and developed country are to them revolting and infuriating.

Where you and I think of the 1920s and 1930s as a time of great economic hardship, they see a golden era of class and wonderful excess.

Where you and I are horrified at the abuse and effective slavery of domestic service they see Downtown Abbey and everything and everybody in its proper place.

Given the choice, you would see every family and individual well adjusted, healthy, educated and free to pursue happiness and fulfilment.

Such a world fills them with ennui.. Where's the fun in that? they say. Where's the drama? How can you keep score without winners and losers and how do know which is which without somebody in a palace and somebody else starving in the street? the concept of personal development and realizing ones potential is for them something that is given lip service to in boring PC speeches but nobody really believes, Most toys wins and the gap between winner and loser shows just how much one wins by. Big stakes are more exciting and there's nothing like luxury when you one of the few. Modern luxuries aren't luxuries at all now because too many people have them.

Where you see and I see egalitarianism as the logical result of mutual respect and fairness, not to mention the best use of a nations human resources, they see a horrible dismantling of a system of privileges and nepotism that they profit from, or would profit from given half the chance.

The policies of the right are driven by an ideology and not by any economic reality or necessity. That's just for the PR. And that is why so many decisions look stupid when they damage the strength and economy of the nation. Because they only seem stupid, if one assumes that they were made for economic reasons rather than ideological ones.

And by the way: this is why they think we're the stupid ones.

But I think in the case of the super-rich like the Kochs (70 billion dollars) it goes much further.

People who have relative wealth often desire absolute wealth (so much money one could never effectively use all of ones resources)

People who achieve absolute wealth desire more of what it grants them: power. After all, absolute wealth means increasing ones wealth achieves vey little in terms of more luxuries.

For the time being we live in an era where much of the poverty of the developed world is relative poverty.

Relative poverty still grants enormous leverage to the rich but in order to gain even more, one would have to create absolute poverty.

In such a situation of absolute rich and absolute poor almost unlimited power over millions people is granted.

In other words, if one has absolute wealth to the point where more money grants little more in terms of power, then it stands to reason that in order to gain more power the only thing left to do is to is move the vast majority of the population towards absolute poverty.

This leverage is already granting Koch and their colleagues enough power to shut down the US government. This threatens to overturn any democratic process not just in the US but in any country within their sphere of influence.

We are looking at a coup. An international one.

And if that sounds crazy, ask yourself this: if the Koch and co folks do indeed bring the US government to the point where they are shut down, default on their loans and effectively collapse or alternatively, if the administration is forced to capitulate, which other country's government will dare oppose them?

Win win for Koch bros and co.

And yes, the Koch folks are already "advising" Ian Duncan Smith. (see the who's who case file thread).

Obama has had something very insightful to say about this:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-24511283
"It wouldn't be wise, as some suggest, to just kick the debt ceiling can down the road for a couple of months, and flirt with a first-ever intentional default right in the middle of the holiday shopping season."
Yeah, it'd be terrible if the shopping season got interrupted.

The true measure of a man is not his intelligence or how high he rises in this freak establishment. The true measure of a man is this: how quickly he can respond to the needs of others and how much of himself he can give - Philip K. Dick.

In the HuffPost an article in two parts by Eric Zuesse

New York Times article on how the Koch and co folks planned this shutdown months in advance
www.nytimes.com/2013/10/06/us/a-federal-...e-planning.html?_r=0

Interesting comment I read:
This isn't fantasy. These are well-funded, long-term plans. Most people don't have the time, inclination or stomach to plow through the historical underpinnings of these seemingly spontaneous "movements", but those of us who have are quite wary. The Kochs and their ilk are the ideological descendants of the same dark figures who attempted a corporate coup against Franklin Roosevelt.

Privatization of the American state?

The inevitable scenario established in the wake of the 2008 crisis is fiscal collapse, leading to “the possible phasing out and/or curtailment of social programs, the privatization of large sectors of public sector activity.”

The fiscal ceiling having now been reached, possibly with a deadline, the government is being pressured by its Wall Street handlers – who control decision-making in the US Congress – to curtail and downsize social programs, as well as initiate the transfer of public assets and institutions into the hands of private corporations. There is also a movement to cut as well as privatize social security and Medicare.

The privatization of public monuments, museums, national parks, the post office etc. has been raised in recent media reports as a possible ‘solution’ to the debt crisis. But let us not be misled: the process of acquisition of federal public property including infrastructure and state institutions is likely to go much further.

The public sector is up for grabs. Wall Street will eventually go on a buying spree picking up state-owned assets at rock bottom prices.

Ironically, the money transferred by the US government to Wall Street under the bailouts in 2008-2009 can now be used by Wall Street to buy out state property and assets. What this means is that the federal government not only finances its own indebtedness, it is also financing the privatization program (at taxpayers’ expense), leading to the demise of federal government programs.

The final blow came shortly after 5 p.m., when Heritage Action for America, the powerful conservative group that drove Republicans to attack Obama’s health-care initiative, sent an e-mail urging lawmakers to vote no because the House bill “will do nothing to stop Obamacare’s massive new entitlements from taking root.”

Soon after, Boehner canceled the vote. An hour later, Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) issued an alert telling lawmakers that the House would be in session Wednesday. No specific legislation was listed for consideration
www.washingtonpost.com/politics/gop-lawm...439845b_story_2.html
Heritage Actions is supported by donors both private and corporate. In October of 2013, Needham admitted "under intense questioning" that Heritage Action was "not being transparent" with their donors as they have generally declined to disclose who their donors are. [22] One exception to this is a donation from conservative billionaires Charles and David Koch: they donated half a million dollars in October of 2013. [23]

Between 2001 and 2010, the Foundation received $3.38 million from the conservative Bradley Foundation.[21]

www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Heritage_Foundation

The Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation (LHBF), formerly known as Allen-Bradley Foundation, was established in 1942, describing itself as "a private, independent grantmaking organization based in Milwaukee."[1]. According to the foundation's 1998 Annual Report and a 2011 report by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation gives away more than $30 million per year.[2][3]

Harry Bradley was one of the original charter members of the far right-wing John Birch Society, along with another Birch Society board member, Fred Koch, the father of Koch Industries' billionaire brothers and owners, Charles and David Koch.[4]

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, “from 2001 to 2009, it [Bradley] doled out nearly as much money as the seven Koch and Scaife foundations combined.”[5]

But it is not just the Kochs by any means
