A topic that has raised it's head in recent discussions and is probably worthy of exploring calmly, divorced from any particular decision making issue.

I might add that this is purely intended to satisfy my own curiosity and is not an attempt to determine policy for the site in any way.

Perhaps, with discussion, the poll result could actually be adopted as site policy to save future conflict?

The most pollers we have had is i believe 29, call it 30 for ease of maths. If 60% voted one way that would be 18-12. I personally think that is not a mandate to implement any change. If only 3 people voted differently it would be a tie. Add to that the issue of people not being able to change their vote on this forum platform.
I suggest we attempt to acheive consensus where all are content with the way forward.

Reaching consensus can take time and lengthy discussion...but this is a discussion board so I don't see why on non-pressing matters consensus can't be achieved. Consensus is not a quick fix, it's about laying long term foundations put in place by all!

I think consensus on anything at all, is never, ever going to happen, so whilst it would be the ideal, it's just an unrealistic pipe dream.

But what if you were say limited to reaching 100% consensus with humans, with their wide variety of opinions, biases and preferences. Does this universe have enough time left to achieve that goal?

Try changing your vote gilly and then when you've done your research and found it doesn't work, get back to me with a red face

How about we do a poll and see if we can agree to disagree and then another one to see whether the majority would rather just hand major decisions over to the mods and the members get no say unless it is a simple thing that doesn't result in arguments, name calling, and down right rude behavior.

I really do think major decisions that affect the entire place should probably be left up to mods, while other things, more simpler things could do with input from members (new mods or whatnot). The major things (guest posting for example) are going to put more strain and create more work for one group of people (the mods), because they are going to have to not only "moderate" what things can be posted, but what can be tolerated and chase down people just looking to troll and so on...so it should be their decision what to do on something like that. The members here aren't going to have to do all the leg work and be in charge of taking care of everything therefore they shouldn't have a choice in the matter.

Not in this thread... in other threads. One particularly comes to mind where the word's 'c*nt' and 'd*ck' were used quite often and tossed back and forth between members "debating" a subject.

Well whether you call it arguing or debating, it's necessary for people to put their thoughts forward to try to reach some decisions. I don't think it's fair to complain about rudeness in a thread where there's been none.

I agree, those words are used often, as well as others...most of the time that I have seen, in a joking manner. Next subject...or more like, back on topic...

Not arguing the point of moving on or meaning to bring it up in this thread... was just making a point that simple things can have a community vote and discussion without behavior as such, while things that would require more work on one group of people than the rest should be left to those people who have to do the leg work and no one else gets a say.

Or if it's too much for the mods they can ask the forum to elect more mods to carry the workload.

Leaving the "big decisions" to "the few" would be forum suicide imho. What if they made the "big decision" to ban discussing moderation?

@ Oioi - I think we could have trust in them not to do such a thing as that - and trust in them generally.
