It is actually incredibly hard for a bank system to 'fail' for longer than 3 hours so this type of failure has never really been seen before.

There are of course underlying rumours that the bank is in trouble and RBS want rid of that section of their portfolio

I imagine their will be a lot of people closing NatWest accounts in the coming weeks

I would say sacking 30,000 staff and taking on IT contractors who didn't have a clue what they were doing could be a teensy weensy part of the problem ;)
