I got hold of a copy of Windows 7 so I decided to upgrade from Vista since it had all but totally failed.
I was quite pleased with Win7, seemed to sort out all the grief Vista was giving me. (I need to use Windows for music software)
But Vista used to run Firefox using about 100k-200k. Now on Win7 it's using a monstrous 475k... I'm not doing anything different.
I wouldn't be that arsed but this is a fairly old & on its way out laptop - using so much of the memory makes the fan whirr very noisily & the computer gets really hot, and will overheat.
Anybody know why Firefox would suddenly need so much more RAM>?

I for got to add that the mozila team claimed recently that they had got the FF memory leak situation under control, I'm not so sure that they have.

I've installed that & it seems to have worked so far.... down to about 100k now, but I've just noticed it keeps going up. Hopefully it won't go too bananas like it was doing.
Ta very much... that might just keep this computer going a bit longer!

Firemin does a pretty good job of keeping the memory leaks in FF under control.

You could always due boot ubuntu unless you need to switch between browsing and composing.

It seems to have mellowed out about 107k now, which is a significant improvement - so thanks again.

I was using a pen drive to boot Linux Mint12 for a while, like you say just for browsing. But it kept stopping working properly for reasons unknown... I'll get round to checking out more Linux distros at some point though.
