Heard this today

Members of the armed forces, who are laid off, are going to be given a guaranteed interview with over 20 firms in the UK

So unemployment in this country is high.

I have an 18 year scrappling around to get employment and this scheme comes up

Is it fair that if you've joined the armed forces then get paid off you should be guaranteed an inteview?

No its not fair, in that (just as with the previous tory government) youth unemployment is less of the priority it should be.

Ex-forces struggling to adjust to civvy street should be helped, sure. But so *equally* should the kids, who are at present being thrown on the scrapheap before they even get a chance.

40 commando (marines) are based just outside of Taunton, not too far away from me.

A year or so ago, they ran a campaign to get local businesses to take on de-mobbed marines.

One businessman responded by saying he'd rather employ drug dealers that had just left prison. Needless to say he took flak

He went to the press and stated his reasons. That being that ex offenders have paid for their crimes whilst in his opinion people that have committed crimes in Iraq etc whilst serving will never be held accountable for what they did.

Brave man if you ask me, although not entirely on the money.

This is another example of a similar initiative which is utter shite.

Next to organised religion, military service has to be one of the greatest cons of all time.
I am no coward and will defend me mine and my neighbours against any threat but I could never grasp why someone would sign a contract that effectively says I will risk my life and go kill anyone you deem necessary for your aims.

Its out of 'patriotism' in many cases.

Remember, the vast majority of people out there aren't as enlightened as you are. They still want to believe that the govt/state acts on their behalf, and has their best interests at heart. Even with all the evidence to the contrary staring them in the face, they still want to believe that shit. Because its easier for them to do so than it is to accept the unpalatable truth.

I don't see how this can possibly even be an issue with employment the way it is in the UK at present. Where are the jobs these ex-army folks are going to be guaranteed interviews for?

Still wrong in my opinion ex forces are guaranteed interviews when children/young adults (whatever you want to call them) aren't
