Cheers Angel - I found this page at your USGS link - a number of useful feeds there: earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/feed/v1.0/atom.php
Think I've become an earthquake spotter - must go dig out my old anorak :)

Haha....well if you're going to don your anorak....you might like to keep the British site saved to your fav's too. This link takes you directly to EQ's in the British Isles...they have a link to world EQ's too

www.earthquakes.bgs.ac.uk/earthquakes/recent_uk_events.html

They've just had a 2.3 in Stroud....which was 'felt'! :O

OK, I now have an explantion as to why the 7.6 is causing so much concern that something bigger is brewing.
The activity during March-April which led to the 8.3 (been upgraded) has a Fault length of 235km, and is therefore not long enough to produce a larger EQ than was.
HOWEVER it could start to unzip north or south at any time.
The 7.6 was 36km from the southern tip of that 235km fault line which is causing the concern. In other words it is not in the bunch of aftershocks in the 235km fault line. Looks like it could be 'unzipping'. If it is, then in the next few weeks we could see a much larger EQ than the 8.3.

PS....this from Earthquake report...
Santiago - There was a deep rumble and lots of shaking, scaring us to immediately head for the front door, many people who were already outside listening to music and other things, began screaming. Took awhile to calm down. Still shaking while writing this note.

OK, I've been looking at charts and maps.....this is not looking good. As predicted (but breaking the 'rules') the EQ's are moving south along the fault. I would like to say that what has been going on since this mornings initial report from Chand is just a constant release of pressure. There have been numerous +5's since this morning, plus minor ones since, on the Nazca fault opposite Santiago. However this next one is south again....only small, but shallow.

My best estimation at the moment is, the fault line is unzipping south. I have not looked at what is happening north of the original 8.6, as I am more concerned for Chand's safety and his family. If there is another in this more southern area and of greater magnitude, then that would tip me over to saying Chile could be in for one that will contend their world record :( . I really, really hope not...but I wouldn't blame Gaia for kicking our arses.

@WH...the volcano has nothing to do with the EQ's and has been 'emitting' for a couple of months, it's just that it's activity has increased. But never the less, I have my own 'unqualified' view point on a possible relationship between fault line EQ's and volcanos...which given current scientific parameters, I would be told to shut up. But the 8.3 has already started re-writing these 'givens'....so we shall see.

Being a newb to all this I only post the volcano eruption for information. Looking at it now its probably too far inland from the fault line....but what do I know :conf:
I just had a look at the Nazca fault line and was surprised to see it follows a deep sea trench just off the West coast of S. America.
There is a coastal shelf and then it drops off dramatically into a mega deep trench. I bet sea monsters live down there :O

That's not even deep sea...note the divers!...the deeper you go the scarier they get!.

We UK sit on a shelf too don't forget..... :D
:jane:

PS...it's Saturday night, and I'll tell you a story......I was teaching at the local 6th form college, and for whatever reason in that Tuesday class, I told my students that by the time we met the following week something so big was going to hit Japan, that it would affect the rest of us. So Friday 7.30'ish am, my friend phones me telling me what's happened in Fukushima. First thing I did.....fired up the laptop to see what was happening in Yellowstone...it was going berserk. Later that morning my phone kept going off from my students. I don't honestly think Yellowstone is going to be the first to blow, I really don't.

After being bitten, in the last couple of days, by the earthquake spotting bug I have been surprised how much seismic activity there is around the world.
Now I am wired up to 5 minute reporting feeds from every corner of the earth I can't help but notice how much, almost constant, activity there is in Alaska and California.
Alaska is sparesly populated but California is one of, if not the most, populated states in the US - I'm thinking maybe people are a bit mad living there. Looking at the maps it seems a great chunk of California could drop off into the sea any time soon :O

Erm...you're a quick learner WH....this is the worry about what is happening in Chile.....California up to Alaska is a continuation of the Nazca fault. Seismologists are concerned about Chile, because for whatever reason, Chile can ride a mega quake, as has been proven in the past. However, whatever happens on the Nazca is constantly weakening the various fault lines that run through California. Trying to keep it simple.
