I don't believe the theories of it once being part of Earth.

When did it get all those craters? And the lava beds? The rilles?

I think what I referenced is what that wiki page gives as the relative size hypothesis.

I see the illusion too, not only with the moon but with the sun. It's certainly an interesting effect.
