There are 20 photo's on this link, of a peaceful anti-austerity demo in Portland, where 20 or (or 30 depending which report you read) were sprayed with pepper spray by police.

(Unfortunately, a flash sommat or other on my laptop won't let me post them)

I hope they go back with goggles on.

The following is a press release from the 'No Dash For Gas' campaign', following their occupation four days ago of the West Burton gas plant in Nottinghamshire. There are currently several activists on top of 300ft high chimneys and cooling towers.

This morning, sixteen climate change campaigners evaded security to shut down the UK’s newest gas-fired power station. They have climbed two smokestacks at EDF’s West Burton plant in Nottinghamshire and have abseiled down the insides of the chimneys. They are now setting up camp in tents suspended from ropes inside the flues. As long as they hold their position above the furnaces the plant is unable to operate.

The occupation fires the starting gun on a huge nationwide battle over Britain’s energy future, with activists determined to stop government plans for a new dash for gas. They are calling instead for a high-tech carbon-free electricity system.

The night-time incursion was launched at 2am when the raiders got through the security fence. Under cover of darkness fifteen of them crossed the expanse to the chimneys then split into two groups and began the 300ft climb to the top. They are now building barricades to defend their positions. They have enough supplies with them to last at least a week and say they’re in it for the long haul.

The plant was shut down shortly after the campaigners began the ascent. A further team remained on the ground to liaise with the plant’s managers. Before launching the protest they engaged in extensive consultation with an expert engineer and each underwent intensive safety training.

West Burton power station in Nottinghamshire is being targeted because it’s one of the first in a new generation of highly polluting gas plants planned for the UK. The Coalition Government recently announced it intends to give the green light to as many as 20 new gas plants – a move that would crash Britain’s carbon targets, contribute to the climate crisis and push up bills.

PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE ISSUE

DISABLED PROTESTOR TO STAGE VIGIL & HUNGER STRIKE OUTSIDE OF ATOS OFFICES IN CARDIFF

DISABLED PEOPLE AGAINST CUTS (DPAC) CAERDYDD

A disabled person in his 30s will lead a five-day hunger strike and vigil outside the ATOS office on St Agnes Road, Gabalfa, Cardiff to protest a letter from the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) declaring him fit for work and cutting his benefits.

Christos Palmer, who has both mental and physical health problems, including depression, self-harm and mobility issues, hopes the protest will highlight the suffering of disabled people caused by current government policies.

ATOS, the French IT company that carries out the controversial Work Capability Assessments assessments for the DWP has been the subject of widespread condemnation from disability charities and the British Medical Association who call for the s to be scrapped completely. The firm has been accused of target chasing for cutting the amount of people found eligible for benefits.

Rob Marsh, a protest spokesperson said,

“Earlier this year a Channel 4 Dispatches documentary revealed the DWP requires ATOS to reject the benefit claims of 7 out of 8 disabled claimants, resulting in immense suffering, homelessness, or death. The mark of a civilised society is how it addresses the needs of its most vulnerable members. Given what is happening to tens of thousands of disabled people in Britain today, we can no longer claim to be a civilized society.

Our campaign is part of a national campaign that goes by the name “Atos Kills”. This is based on well-documented evidence that approximately 32 disabled people a week died last year after their Atos Work Capability Assessments deemed them “fit to work” and stopped benefits. This year the figure has risen to 73 deaths per week including suicides”

A spokesperson from Disabled People Against Cuts in Cardiff said,

“While we support the protest aims we are extremely concerned about Christos’s physical and mental well-being. He often suffers from extreme fatigue and is housebound on some days. That somebody so unwell has been driven to this shows the desperation that the sick and disabled are being driven to by this government. We are urging him to end his hunger strike”

The protest begins on Monday [5th November] at 8 am and end on Friday afternoon.

Yesterday morning (Saturday) a small but significant demonstration took place in front of the already controversial Mill Road Tesco in Cambridge, accompanied by the strains of Billy Bragg on a portable sound system.

502434

This was in solidarity with 200 delivery drivers who are currently working for Tesco, but who have had their contracts transferred to the Eddie Stobart haulage firm, who then summarily issued all these drivers with 90 days' notice, meaning their jobs are due to terminate just before Christmas - a nice present for their families, in the 'best' of Scrooge spirit!!

This has been called by some a blatant union busting operation, as not only will the drivers be offered new contracts with Eddie Stobart on a much lower payscale, but their pensions will be repealed and there will be no union representation.

This scandalous state of affairs occurs just months after it came to light that Tesco also support the DWP's so-called 'Workfare' scheme, in which long term unemployed are forced to work full time hours for Tesco (and other companies) for their Giros, under the threat of all their benefits being cut if they refuse.

So, it would seem that 'every little helps' Tesco to maintain their bottom line at the expense of their employee's pay and conditions, as well as pushing working conditions back to the times of Feudal Indentured Labour!

Not that I ever shopped there anyway.

Chingiz Kozhogulov is hunger striking outside parliament to raise awareness of the destructive nature of betting shops. He wants them closed!!!! Please support him!!

Chingiz Kozhogulov, 32 who lives in Tower Hamlets has been addicted to gambling since 2004 when a friend of his introduced him to fixed odds betting terminals.

"I lost trust from my friends, wife even my kids. I will not stop my hunger strike until shut down betting shops or at list remove FOBT machines. " Says Chingiz.

He says it is his only option now , when speaking to him he told us if he was going to die from gambling addiction, he may aswell do some good.

He plans to go on hunger strike until betting shops are closed down.

Since the gambling act 2005 came into place in 2007, corporate gambling industry giants such as Ladbrokes, Coral , William Hill and Betfred have launched an all out assault on the UK's general public.

There are more gambling addicts and betting shops on our high streets than ever before. This is contributing to part of a mass depression, with higher rates of crime, poverty, family breakdowns and mental health issues , causing our communities to become very dark places.

Please support him , he is outside of parliament doing a very brave thing.

Thousands of pot-banging, flag-waving, banner-hoisting demonstrators massed in Buenos Aires for Argentina’s largest anti-government protest in years. Common themes at the protest included the nation's high levels of crime, corruption and inflation.

The demonstration, which lasted nearly four hours, was aimed at the government of President Cristina Fernandez de Kircher. Police officials said at least 30,000 people participated, while local media reported that hundreds of thousands turned out.

Protesters angry at the nation’s current state banged pots and pans as Argentinians young and old rallied until almost midnight.

A column of demonstrators carried a 200-meter-long flag. As they marched through the city, they were greeted with noisy pans, tambourines, and honking car horns.

Protesters chanted, “We’re not afraiid!" as they swarmed into the Plaza de Mayo and surrounding area, right in front of the presidential palace.

They shouted, whistled, and held banners that read "Constitution is written with C, not K," referring to the ‘K dictatorship’ of Fernandez de Kircher’s government.

Another sign read, “Stop the wave of Argentines killed by crime, enough with corruption and say no to the constitutional reform.”

The sign referred to a widely held fear that President Fernandez will attempt to stay in office for a third term through a constitutional reform ending presidential term limits.

The protesters rattled off a long list of complaints about the current government: The country’s soaring inflation, violent crime rates and high-profile corruption.

"I came to protest everything that I don't like about this government and I don't like a single thing starting with [the president's] arrogance…they're killing policemen like dogs, and the president doesn't even open her mouth. This government is just a bunch of hooligans and corrupters,” 74-year-old retiree Marta Morosini told AP.

Protests took place in other cities throughout Argentina, including the major cities of Cordoba, Mendoza and La Plata.

In countries elsewhere around the world, demonstrators gathered in front of Argentinean embassies and consulates.

Around 50 angry demonstrators gathered in front of the consulate in Rome shouting,“Cristina, go away.”

In Madrid, another group of about 200 protesters braved the rain to bang pots outside the Argentinean consulate.

"In Argentina, there's no separation of power and it cannot be considered a democracy…Cristina is not respecting the constitution. The presidency is not a blank check and she must govern for those who are for her and against her,” Marcelo Gimenez, a 40-year-old Argentinean who currently resides in Spain said.

During a speech on Thursday, Fernandez did not directly address the protests, but instead defended her government’s policies and affirmed her dedication to the job.

"Never let go, not even in the worst moments," she said."Because it's in the worst moments when the true colors of a leader of a country comes out."

Fernandez won a second term last year with 54 percent of the vote.

Her administration has been accused of alienating large sections of the middle class, and has drawn criticism for limiting imports and imposing controls on foreign currency exchanges, making it difficult for Argentines to travel abroad.
