Chinese cartoonists have field day with NSA revelations

The Chinese media have been particularly interesting to watch, given Edward Snowden’s decision to seek refuge in Hong Kong and China’s own history of state surveillance.

By Whitney Eulich, Staff writer / June 13, 2013

The picture of Edward Snowden, bottom, a former CIA employee who leaked top-secret documents about sweeping US surveillance programs, is displayed on the front page of South China Morning Post at a news stand in Hong Kong Thursday, June 13, 2013. Snowden dropped out of sight after checking out of a Hong Kong hotel on Monday. The South China Morning Post newspaper said it was able to locate and interview him on Wednesday.

Internet companies have rejected the UK government’s call for snooping on Britons' online communications.

The world’s five biggest internet companies have refused to voluntarily cooperate with the British government’s controversial Communications Data Bill, known as the “Snooper’s Charter”.

In a leaked letter to British Home Secretary Theresa May, which dated on April 18, web companies, including Google, Microsoft, Yahoo!, Twitter and Facebook, said the UK government’s revised proposals to track people's online communications remain "expensive to implement and highly contentious", The Guardian reported.

They also warned that the plan requiring overseas internet companies to store all British-based users’ communications data for up to 12 months has "potentially seriously harmful consequences".

The Communications Data Bill, which was first published last year, drew wide opposition from across the political establishment with Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg withdrawing his support from the bill in April on the grounds that it was an invasion of privacy.

Recently, however, the Home Secretary called for the bill to be revived in the wake of the murder of British soldier Lee Rigby, who was stabbed to death in Woolwich, south-east London last week.

The so-called “Snooper’s Charter” would have given agencies, including police and spying services, access to information and data collection by Internet service providers, including details of individuals' web browsing history, social media messages and internet gaming, storing them all for 12 months.

Earlier in April, a survey by civil liberties and privacy campaign group Big Brother Watch British also found that British police forces are making as many as 250,000 requests to snoop on people's email and phone call details every year.

Yet they cooperate with no such agency, perhaps it's because the NSA have at least offered to store the info themselves lol

A majority of Americans – 56% – say the National Security Agency’s (NSA) program tracking the telephone records of millions of Americans is an acceptable way for the government to investigate terrorism, though a substantial minority – 41% – say it is unacceptable.

And no it isn't just wingnuts. Partisanship is so far gone their that Obama-lickers are actually ambivalent/supportive. I imagine that had this come to light during the Bush administration they would have been howling. Lesson: most political partisans have lost any political and moral compass.
69% of Democrats say it is more important for the government to investigate terrorist threats, even at the expense of personal privacy, as do 62% of Republicans and 59% of independents.

Edward Snowden 'banned from flying to UK'

The UK government has warned airlines not to allow an ex-CIA employee who leaked secret US surveillance details to fly to the UK, according to reports.
The Associated Press news agency reported seeing a document at a Thai airport telling carriers to stop Edward Snowden, 29, boarding any flights.
The travel alert - reported to feature a Home Office letterhead - said Mr Snowden "is highly likely to be refused entry to the UK".
The Home Office would not comment.

According to AP, the alert was issued on Monday by the Home Office's risk and liaison overseas network.
The document had a photograph of Snowden and gave his date of birth and passport number, the news agency reported.
It said: "If this individual attempts to travel to the UK: Carriers should deny boarding."
It went on to warn airlines they may "be liable to costs relating to the individual's detention and removal'' should they allow him to travel.
According to the Home Office's website, a charge for such a situation would be £2,000.

Bangkok Airways, Singapore Airlines and Malaysia Airlines confirmed they had received the notice, which was not supposed to be seen by the public, AP reported.

Mr Snowden was last seen in Hong Kong, where he travelled ahead of the Guardian newspaper's story which revealed the extent of the National Security Agency's (NSA) programme to seize data from US internet and telephone firms. There is no suggestion that he has any intention of trying to travel to the UK.

Mr Snowden's actions have divided opinion in the US, with some calling him a hero and others calling for him to be tried for treason.

Here in Chile the TV has shown it once in ONLY one Channel the SNA scandal, the rest NOT a thing.
They are concentrated on internal political stuff. People don't even talk about it.

Newspapers have talked about it.
