Self-sufficiency is the state of not requiring any aid, support, or interaction, for survival; it is therefore a type of personal or collective autonomy. The term self-sufficiency is usually applied to varieties of sustainable living in which nothing is consumed outside of what is produced by the self-sufficient individuals. Examples of attempts at self-sufficiency include simple living, homesteading, off-the-grid, survivalism, DIY ethic and the back-to-the-land movement. Practices that enable or aid self-sufficiency include autonomous building, permaculture, sustainable agriculture, and renewable energy. The term is also applied to limited forms of self-sufficiency, for example growing one's own food or becoming economically independent of state subsidies. Hello app...I answered in your other thread. I think there may have just been a bit of a misunderstanding.

Just to add my twopennarth - I read it 30 years ago btw.

How unusual that book was. This was the only book I've ever read which I found to be like wading through treacle in long sections, rather than avidly flicking pages. There were parts that were sheer drudgery to read. Yet, what a stirring and vivid impression was left by the overall story, that 30 years later I'm still comparing most good v evil stories against it and finding they come up short.

Today I had a right hissy fit and deleted loads of my contributions to a forum making the threads I posted in look really disjointed mainly because I take myself too seriously at times.

I've also been mixing my life up with the OP.

I made cinnamon & raisin bagels. Then I made banana and peanut flapjacks with chocolate coated raisins in them. I also dug a border, messed about with my compost heaps and went for a walk. It's been a great day.

I made them for my son and Mr P for packed lunches and snacks for the next couple of days. They're almost gone now.

I've been making more of my own stuff, so we can eat better quality food and I was hoping to save money and I've been batch cooking like this. They just eat more when I cook more though. It was my first attempt at bagels, and the recipe is really good.

This is the banana flapjack recipe, only I use 2 bananas and then I added 200g of salted peanuts and 200g of chocolate coated raisins. It's a very adaptable recipe, but the peanut one today is one of the best ones yet. :)

Same here - you make treats to last a week, and they go through it in moments, like a swarm of starving locusts.

I understand now why, when growing up, we'd sometimes find packets of crisps & things secreted in very unlikely places, and the use-by date would have expired years earlier. My mum would have forgotten where she'd hidden them to prevent my brothers scoffing everything at once. :D
