US military chip vulnerable to "IP theft, fraud and Trojans", researchers find

Cambridge University researchers find that a microprocessor used by the US military but made in China contains secret remote access capability

A microchip used by the US military and manufactured in China contains a secret "backdoor" that means it can be shut off or reprogrammed without the user knowing, according to researchers at Cambridge University's Computing Laboratory.

However, one security consultancy has said that the implication that the backdoor might have been secretly inserted by the Chinese manufacturer is "bogus", and that malicious intent is unlikely.

do you think they might have used the back door as part of quality testing or some other problem solving part of the production line?

:coffee:

Suppose I have to step in and say something worthy of a 'Carry On' film here?

*SIGH*

OK. Here goes...

I'm usually all in favour of a bit of 'back door' access, but this just isn't on.

In all seriousness though, I was of the impression that anything manufactured this way has a 'back door' simply by nature of it's design.

To think otherwise is it a bit naive, really. Certainly, it might make generation iWank a bit more weary about having stuff up 'em.

Dear lord, stop the world. I wanna get orf and vomit.
